Streams of Hope was recently awarded $1,250 and $3,000 grants from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation! We are so grateful for these generous gifts that will allow us to expand our summer reading program for elementary students and our after-school tutoring program this fall.

Five years ago, we recognized a need to expand educational and fun activities for our students during the summertime. There was a great opportunity to engage students and also explore educational topics through a summer camp. Thus, the World Cup Summer Readers Camp was born!

The summer camp program has elementary students reading, learning about cultures around the world, and playing soccer on Wednesday evenings throughout the summer. We aim to foster a love of reading and grow literacy skills in these kids, in addition to the great physical exercise (getting the wiggles out!) that summer camp brings. We have a great team of camp counselors who help students learn and grow. And best of all, it’s completely FREE for families! The program also features a hot dog dinner for parents and families to encourage relationship-building in our neighborhood.

These gifts from Dollar General also support our tutoring program, which serves over 80 students each week with free tutoring in math and reading. We are so pleased that 85% of students in our tutoring program improve one grade level or more during their time at Streams of Hope.

“The Dollar General Literacy Foundation is proud to be an ardent supporter of schools, libraries and nonprofit literacy organizations,” says Todd Vasos, Dollar General’s chief executive officer. “Dollar General’s mission is Serving Others, and this commitment comes to life through Dollar General Literacy Foundation grants that will impact thousands of students across the country. Since its inception 25 years ago, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation has partnered with thousands of organizations focused on advancing the goals of literacy and education.”

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation grant will help us sustain and expand our summer and fall programs, benefiting students in our neighborhood. We want to say a huge THANK YOU to Dollar General for awarding us with these grants, and we are excited to see how the program expands this year.
