Streams of Hope was just awarded a $1,250 grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation! We are so grateful for this generous gift that will allow us to expand our summer reading program for elementary students.
Five years ago, we recognized a need to expand educational and fun activities for our students during the summertime. There was a great opportunity to engage students and also explore educational topics through a summer camp. Thus, the World Cup Summer Readers Camp was born!
The program has elementary students reading, learning about cultures around the world, and playing soccer on Wednesday evenings throughout the summer. We aim to foster a love of reading and grow literacy skills in these kids, in addition to the great physical exercise (getting the wiggles out!) that summer camp brings. We have a great team of camp counselors who help students learn and grow. And best of all, it’s completely FREE for families!
The Dollar General Literacy Foundation grant will help us sustain and expand our program, which currently draws 40-50 children. The program also features a hot dog dinner for parents and families to encourage relationship-building in our neighborhood. We want to say a huge THANK YOU to Dollar General for awarding us with this grant, and we are excited to see how the program expands this year.
