We were so pleased to welcome our neighbors to our first ever Bike Rodeo event on Saturday, May 5!

Many families came for a fun afternoon of food and bicycles. The purpose of the event was to bless families, bring neighbors together, and provide an opportunity for us to collaborate with some of our organizational partners. There was a bike giveaway, face painting, hot dogs for the whole family, and bike repair and safety tips.

The event was supported by generous gifts from Meijer, Oakdale Neighbors, the Kent County Sheriff Department, South Christian High School, and Grand Flower Growers.

Local kids had the opportunity to earn a free bike by volunteering at the Streams of Hope community garden for one Saturday this spring. The bikes were provided and refurbished by students at South Christian High School.  The “earn a bike” giveaway was a great opportunity for many of our neighborhood children to get something they had never had before – a bike of their own.

Bike safety was also an important topic. Deputy Krystal Stuart and other police officers from the Kent County Sheriff Department were giving safety instructions. Meijer donated bicycle helmets to protect kids’ heads.

We also had two local bike stores offer their assistance. Oakdale Neighbors was at the Bike Rodeo to explain common bike repair and DIY tips. And our friends at Village Bike assisted with bike repair and donated bike seats, handles, and locks.

All in all, it was a great time to celebrate the warm weather, great neighbors, and a healthy activity for kids. We are so appreciative of all our partners and especially to the families who showed up to make it a wonderful day. We can’t wait until next year!
